High demand for certain food products, like meats, could affect how much you can buy during the upcoming holiday season.
Patrick Penfield, an expert of supply chain practices at Syracuse University, says prices have skyrocketed partially as a result of the pandemic, especially for meats including chicken, pork, and beef.
He says the rise in prices is due to how hard the pandemic hit the meat industry last year when many employees contracted COVID-19.
“A lot of it is because of the pandemic right," said Penfield. "It kind of changed our whole demand pattern and that’s the big issue. That’s why prices have gone up.”
Penfield also said meat producers are increasing prices to make more margin and gain a higher profit.
Penfield is hopeful that once the holiday season is over we will start to see products returning to their original prices or even decrease as we reach February.
