Kate Mulgrew says she has a hard time saying ‘no’ to Kathryn Janeway

Kate Mulgrew may be down for a live-action return to Star Trek.

Kate Mulgrew is a well-known actress who has done more than her fair share of projects that caught people’s eye. Yet, what may be her biggest claim to fame for her career is arguably the time she spent on Star Trek: Voyager. She served as Captain Kathryn Janeway for seven seans on the series. It was a landmark show for the franchise, as she was not only the first female captain to get her own show but it was also the first show to air on broadcast television nationwide on one given night and time.

Voyager was a hit for the most part and while its reputation was unfairly knocked due to people wanting to take cheap shots at it, the series has gained a lot in recent years as people have returned to watching older shows with their availability on streaming services.

The newer shows helped some too, either because fans were turned off by them and decided to rewatch (or experience for the first time) the older products or because they were so enthralled with the newer shows, they went back and relive/experienced the older shows as well.

Whether fans love or hate the new stuff, it gave many people a reason to give Voyager and other shows another go.

Kate Mulgrew would return as Kathryn Janeway in live-action Star Trek

With fan support for Voyager may be at an all-time high, it’s no surprise that Mulgrew agreed to return as Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy, where she’ll play the Emergency Command Hologram, based on her character from Voyager – Kathryn Janeway. She’ll be joined by Voyager cast-mate Robert Beltran, who will also reprise his Voyager role as Chakotay.

Due to all the hoopla around this project, it seems as though the demand for more Janeway is only growing. When CinemaBlend’s Mick Joest spoke with Mulgrew, the question was asked if fans could expect to see her back as Janeway in a live-action portrayal. She replied she wasn’t sure but was open to it, saying;

"That’s a good question and a tough question because I don’t really have an answer, and nobody has asked. So, I’m fine, in the moment. I suspect they will ask at some point because – for legacy purposes, if nothing else. It would be very interesting to see her once more. And then we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. But as you can see, I have a very difficult time saying no to Janeway, don’t I?"

So while Mulgrew is not set to return in person to Star Trek any time soon, her turn in Prodigy will certainly get fans excited for not only her involvement in Star Trek again (20 years after it ended, by the way), but the possibility that there’s more down the line in time.
