Debra Messing apologizes for disrespecting Kim Kardashian’s ‘SNL’ status

Emmy winner Debra Messing is still dealing with the fallout from questioning Kim Kardashian’s “SNL”-worthiness.

The notoriously outspoken actress, 53, has apologized for a September tweet asking why Kardashian, 40, was chosen to host “Saturday Night Live.” Messing appeared on “Tamron Hall” Wednesday to publicly apologize and discuss the kerfuffle and her reaction after watching the show.

“Why Kim Kardashian?” Messing’s tweet read ahead of Kardashian’s well-received “SNL” appearance. “I mean, I know she is a cultural icon, but ‘SNL’ has hosts, generally, who are performers who are there to promote a film, TV show, or album launch.”

On Hall’s show, she explained that she had no intention of bullying the billionaire and was merely wondering why “SNL” had chosen to break with its tradition of booking performers with something to promote.

“Well, I was not intending to troll her and you know if anybody took it that way, I apologize,” Messing told Hall, in an attempt to save face. “That was never my intention. She is this phenomenon. I mean, you know, she is a cultural icon.”

She went on to explain that she “grew up with ‘SNL.’ I love comedy, and they have had, for decades, this sort of formula. And I noticed that they changed the formula, and I was like, ‘Oh, does she have a new TV show coming out? Does she have a book coming out? Is she in a movie?’ And she didn’t have anything coming out.”

The fact that “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” recently wrapped further confused the “Will & Grace” star, who admits she has been “living under a rock” and doesn’t “have my finger on the pulse of pop culture” as she’s “been so focused on activism.”

After watching Kim’s episode, though, Messing admits she was wholly wrong about her hosting abilities.

“I watched her and I thought she was amazing, and I was rooting for her,” Messing said. “If you know me, and you follow me, then you know that I consistently lift up women. I support women. So you know, I hope that people understand that was never my intention.”
