CLINTON, Miss. (WJTV) – On Wednesday, leaders with the Clinton Public School District said a Clinton High School student brought an unloaded firearm on campus.
“Our administration was notified that there was a student on campus with an unloaded firearm,” said Robert Chapman, the public information officer for the Clinton Public School District.
After administrators were notified, they removed the student and found the firearm in a gym bag. Officials said the student told someone about the gun, and the person notified school leaders.
“Somebody saw something that was not correct, and they knew that it was dangerous and that other students were put in danger,” said Chapman.
The gun was taken into possession by the school’s resource officer, and the student was turned over to the Clinton Police Department.
Patrice Donald, who is a parent, said her daughter knew the student who brought the gun to school. When she got the news, she said she could only think the worst.
“I’m livid that students now have to fear if they’re friends are going to harm them. I’m livid that we’re living in a society where more and more students are doing this, and I don’t want to have to live in fear that everyday I put my child on that bus that they may not come back,” said Donald.
She also said not enough is being done to keep students safe, and she would like to see metal detectors go up in the high school for protection.
Clinton Police Chief Ford Hayman said the student was charged with bringing a weapon to an educational campus and is being held at the youth detention center.
