ATLANTA, Ga. -- A Milledgeville man on the balcony of luxury apartments in Atlanta is dead after he began shooting at officers and authorities returned fire.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the shooting at Atlantic House, a high-rise apartment building at 1163 Peachtree Street in Atlanta.
On Wednesday, October 20, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) asked the GBI to begin an investigation into the shooting incident.
Early investigations reveal that at 3:14 a.m., APD officers responded to a report of gunfire at the apartments.
Officers determined that the source of the shots was coming from the 21st floor.
When they approached the scene, they found Jarvis Jarrette, 32, of Milledgeville.
He was shooting from a balcony on the apartments.
He then fired a rifle at responding officers and at least one officer returned fire.
Officers went into the apartment and found a woman dead inside.
They also found Jarrette dead on the balcony.
The GBI investigation is limited to the use of force by the involved officers. APD homicide investigators are investigating the original incident, the death of a woman and related incidents.
The Atanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is asking people to please submit their videos of the scene and any information known to authorities.
"Please call 911. We did start receiving phone calls but we did start receiving information and have received more information quite frankly than we have received through our 911 center. So, for us to be able to appropriately respond and assess, we just asked if you can put down your camera, put down your phone, call 911 and allow us to do what we do," stated Bottoms.
Anyone who has captured video of this incident can download the See Something, Send Something mobile app to submit videos. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS(8477) or online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online.
Once the GBI investigation is completed, it will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office for review.
This is the 79th officer involved shooting that the GBI has been asked to investigate in 2021.
