A new report says an all-new 2023 Subaru Ascent Wilderness is on the way. Here's why an Ascent Wilderness 3-Row family hauler would be a good fit now.

A report from Automotive News (by subscription) says Subaru's Ascent three-row crossover is scheduled to get a refresh in the second half of 2022, when it is likely to add interior and safety improvements, get an upgrade to its exterior styling, and may pick up a new Wilderness trim level.

The 2022 Outback Wilderness trim is already a big hit with outdoor enthusiasts, as will the 2022 Forester Wilderness when it arrives this winter. The next model to get the Wilderness treatment is the next-generation 2023 Crosstrek subcompact SUV. Why not an Ascent Wilderness trim level for active families?

The Subaru Wilderness is a new sub-brand and a halo trim for the Camden, N.J. automaker, but Subaru of America has not announced an Ascent Wilderness yet. The latest entry for the family hauler is the new 2022 Ascent Onyx Edition trim level. The new blacked-out model gives the 3-Row SUV a bit more luxury.

The Onyx Edition comes standard with reverse automatic braking, hands-free power rear gate, heated steering wheel, and keyless access with push-button start. A single option package is available for Onyx Edition ($2,200), including a panoramic moonroof, navigation, and retractable cargo cover.

But a new Ascent Wilderness trim for active customers would set the model apart from all other 3-Row SUVs.

What are the price and trim levels for the 2022 Ascent?

The 2022 Subaru Ascent base starts at $33,420, and Premium trims begin at $35,920. The new Ascent Onyx Edition starts at $39,120. The upper trim Limited starts at $40,720, and the top trim Touring has a starting MSRP of $46,570. Pricing includes destination fees.

What's coming for the 2023 Subaru Ascent?

The Ascent SUV was scheduled to refresh its 2022 models, but the family hauler will now get new upgrades for the 2023 model year. The refresh will likely include a new front fascia outside (headlights, bumper, hexagon grille) and unique interior upgrades with fabric changes inside, a new exterior color, and new wheels.

The complete remodel from the ground up will come in 2024 for the Ascent 3-Row family hauler. If reports are accurate, it could be the second-generation model that gets the Wilderness upgrades. Stay tuned.
