NEWPORT – Now that fall is here, people are craving savory soups.

Everyone has a favorite. Maybe it’s a White Bean Chicken Soup, a soothing chicken broth-based soup, filled with white beans, roasted chicken, herbs, and hearty root vegetables.

It could be something a little exotic, something like a creamy Bourride Fish Stew With Aioli that is popular in Marseille, France, and includes, besides fresh fish, white wine, fresh fennel, garlic, lemons, and extra virgin olive oil.

Maybe it’s a basic soup with a twist, like a Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup with Goat Cheese.

Inspiration can came from all over, like an Asian Dumpling Soup made with chicken or beef broth, soy sauce, fresh ginger and garlic, with the boiled dumplings of course.

If you don’t feel like cooking, you can always go out. We asked some Newport restaurants what soups they offer that are especially popular with their patrons. Many of them are among the comfort foods we all know.

New England Clam Chowder

This is a popular offering at many restaurants, but The Mooring on America’s Cup Avenue offers one that many people crave. The new FoodLove Market on Aquidneck Avenue sells this chowder in quart containers for takeout.

You can get some of your Newport Restaurant Group favorites at Foodlove Market, including The Mooring's clam chowder.

French Onion Soup

Made with finely sliced onions that are caramelized and mixed with beef broth, topped with gratinéed croutons or a larger piece of bread and cheese, this is a soup that never fails to satisfy in the late fall or winter. People swear they get the best French Onion Soup at Stoneacre, which has locations on Washington Square and in Brick Market. Camille LeBron, a hostess at the restaurant, confirmed that it is very popular among their patrons.

Butternut Squash Soups

The soup among the most requested at Caleb & Broad on Broadway is made with butternuts from Quonset View Farm in Portsmouth, said owner Rich Willis, the restaurant owner. Nearby at the Salvation Café there is a different recipe for the Maple Butternut Bisque that the restaurant offers. On Washington Square, Bar Cino offers a Butternut & Celeriac Soup. The deep nutty flavor of the celeriac, a root vegetable, cuts nicely through the sweet butternut squash, one customer said.

Minestrone Soup

Minestrone, the classic soup often made with chicken stock or bean broth and containing vegetables like beans, onions, celery, carrots, and tomatoes, comes originally from Italy. Lucia Tacchi, the owner of Lucia's restaurant on Thames Street who comes from Italy, offers a popular minestrone soup. The staff says the Pasta e Ceci Soup, a stew of chickpeas and tender small pasta cooked in a tomato-rich broth, is also popular

North Atlantic Haddock Chowder

The chowder is really popular among patrons of the Corner Café on Broadway, says owner Jamey Simoes. However, he also swears by the restaurant’s Scallop & Bacon Chowder and Manhattan Clam Chowder.
