Examining the roster ties between Patriots, Jets ahead of Week 7

The same former New England Patriots and New York Jets from September will cross paths again in October.

And not only coaches Bill Belichick, Bo Hardegree, Mick Lombardi and Leon Washington.

Here’s the list of ties between the active rosters, practice squads and reserve lists heading into Sunday’s 1 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium.

NEW YORK

Braxton Berrios, wide receiver — Drafted No. 210 overall by the Patriots in 2018, Berrios resided on injured reserve for his rookie season on the way to earning a Super Bowl LIII ring. The Miami Hurricanes product would then be claimed by the Jets at the 53-man roster deadline in 2019. Berrios has since played in 37 games for the AFC East counterpart. The 26-year-old wideout stands with 59 receptions for 665 yards and three touchdowns. He also stands with five carries for 44 yards while averaging 18.7 yards per kickoff return and 10.8 yards per punt return.

Conor McDermott, offensive tackle — The Jets moved McDermott to injured reserve after he had been carted off in the second game of the preseason with a knee injury. The tackle out of UCLA was once the final selection an abbreviated 2017 Patriots draft class. McDermott would be waived by New England following his rookie summer and claimed by the Buffalo Bills. He’d later be claimed by the Jets in 2019. The 29-year-old has seen the field for 22 games and three starts during his stay with New York. McDermott played 247 snaps on offense and 48 snaps on special teams last campaign.

Adrian Colbert, safety — The Patriots signed Colbert in May and released the veteran defensive back as rosters reduced from 80. Colbert, who intercepted a pass during his preseason audition, proceeded to find his way to East Rutherford. The Jets signed Colbert to the practice squad to begin September, and after serving as a standard elevation both in Week 1 and in Week 2, the 28-year-old landed on the active roster. Colbert started three of his four contests this fall before the bye, logging 43 percent of the snaps in the secondary and an additional 32 percent of the snaps in the kicking game. The 2017 seventh-round pick by way of Miami and Texas has recorded 16 tackles for his seventh NFL club.

NEW ENGLAND

Matt LaCosse, tight end — The Patriots signed LaCosse to the practice squad at its formation in September behind 53-man tight ends Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry and Devin Asiasi. The 29-year-old had been among New England’s eight Covid-19 opt-outs last season after catching 13 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown the season prior. LaCosse originally entered the NFL with the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2015. The Illinois alum then spent a week with the Jets during training camp that August before returning to the Giants and then heading to the Denver Broncos.

Henry Anderson, defensive tackle — The Patriots placed Anderson on injured reserve in early October. The 30-year-old defensive lineman appeared in four games and posted three tackles prior to suffering a season-ending torn pectoral. Anderson had signed a two-year, $7 million pact with New England in March after his release from New York in a move that opened north of $8 million. The Jets had acquired Anderson from the Indianapolis Colts during the 2018 draft. Originally a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2015, Anderson has started 43 contests and checked into 78 in his career. He’s totaled 170 tackles, 11.5 sacks, eight batted passes, four blocked kicks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Harvey Langi, linebacker — Langi re-signed to New England’s 53-man roster after being part of a procedural transaction to get wide receiver N’Keal Harry to injured reserve at the NFL deadline. Previously, the linebacker from BYU had returned to the Patriots in May and registered 18 tackles, one sack and an interception in August. Langi first entered the league with New England as an undrafted free agent in 2017. The 28-year-old accrued the last three seasons with New York. He has since handled 57 percent of the workload on special teams, which ranks sixth on the Patriots through six games.

Nick Folk, kicker — Folk, who turns 37 in November, began the year on the New England practice squad as a standard elevation before officially rejoining the 53. A franchise record of 36 field goals in a row followed for the 2007 Pro Bowler. And after that streak snapped, a new one began. Against the Houston Texans, a pair of 52-yarders soared through the uprights along with a game-winner from close range that led to AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. He did not attempt a field goal in Week 6, yet sits at a career-best 93.3 percent. Folk had kicked in 104 games for New York from 2010 through 2016. Stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona Hotshots were on the itinerary after his Jets departure.
