Woman found, man dead after Rochester-area abduction

According to police, Jessica Northrup, 43, has been located safely.

MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — After some tense moments in the Rochester area overnight, a man is dead and a woman who was taken from her apartment is safe.

Police say that kidnapping happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday when Paul Collen abducted 43-year-old Jessica Northrup from in the Town of Ogden.

They say she managed to get away to a police station 5:30 a.m. Wednesday and that she was seriously hurt by Collen and was taken to a hospital.

A short time later, police say they found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, near the home where she said she was held.

Police are still investigating what happened. They say the two were in a relationship but didn't give details.

"This is my first time in 27 years in working the Ogden Police Department where we actually had a kidnapping, so it's kind of new to us," Ogden Police Chief Chris Mears said. "But again, it just brings to light the dangers and hazards to domestic related violence, so, again happy to have her found and safe and being treated."

School was delayed and neighbors were told to shelter in place during the search because police said Collen was armed and dangerous.

Correction: an earlier version of this story mistakenly identified the suspect from Niagara County. He is not.
