Colonials Can't Contain Wright State

Raiders grab 30-28 win in first set en route to 3-0 victory

Moon Township, Pa. – The RMU volleyball team returned to the UPMC Events Center Tuesday, dropping a 3-0 decision to Wright State. The Colonials dropped their fourth consecutive match in dipping to 9-13 (.409) overall during the 2021 campaign, including 2-8 (.200) in the Horizon League.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

Facing a Wright State squad that entered the match having won 18 consecutive sets, the Colonials took the Raiders to the brink in the opening set. RMU grabbed a 12-9 lead with a 3-0 spurt that featured kills from middle blocker Emma Granger and outside hitter Abby Ryan as well as a service ace from Granger. The lead stayed at three for the Colonials, 15-12, after outside hitter Alyson Londot provided a kill on a feed from junior Allena Carmody. Wright State chipped away, tying the first set, 21-21, thanks to a kill from Callie Martin, which set up a back-and-forth affair the rest of the way. Kills by Londot and Granger gave RMU a chance at set point, but the Raiders had an answer each time. Tied, 28-28, Lainey Stephenson pushed WSU in front, 29-28, with a kill, and the Raiders sealed the opening set win, 30-28, on an attack error.

BALANCE BEAM

The first set featured 16 ties and eight lead changes, but Wright State (15-6 / 7-2 #HLVB) was able to extend its streak of consecutive set victories to 21 with a 25-16 win in set two and 25-14 in the third and final set. The Raiders received a balanced attack offensively, with seven different student-athletes recording at least five kills. Megan Alders garnered match-high honors with 10 and finished with a .345 hitting percentage, while Sam Ott (8) and Nyssa Baker (7) combined for 15 kills without an attack error. As a team Wright State posted an attack percentage of .345 and also racked up 58 digs, including 14 from Martin and 12 from Jenna Story.
