In Douglas County, the number of breakthrough cases of COVID-19 remains low, at 1.3%. Health director Dr. Lindsay Huse said the number of vaccinated people who died is even lower.
"The death rate of those who've been vaccinated and gone on to develop COVID is .01, so certainly still a very low rate there," Huse said.
On the flip side of that data, CHI infectious disease expert, Dr. Renuga Vivekanandan said you're at a much higher risk of severe illness if you do not get the shot.
"Ninety-five percent of the patients dying in Nebraska are unvaccinated," Vivekanandan said. "And 94% of those patients getting hospitalized are unvaccinated."
She said there is still research being done on why certain health conditions can raise the risk for a severe case of COVID-19.
"Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure even your weight, if you have a high BMI, body mass index, so a lot of things can predispose once you get COVID-19 you have severe disease," Vivekanandan said.
Data from Douglas County Health Department dashboard shows 88% of the COVID-19 patients who died had at least one other health condition. Nearly 40% had cardiovascular disease.
Vivekanandan said your best course of action is to simply get the shot. Then later, get a booster if you're eligible.
"So what we're learning is that immunocompromised, elderly you might need that extra shot to bring that immune response high," Vivekanandan said. "It's not that the vaccines are not working. The vaccines are working. You just might need a little bit extra boost."
