Treasures bought and sold at garage sale day in Pecan Plantation

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 14 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

Saturday, Oct. 16, brings Pecan’s fall garage sale day. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., residents and guests will be shopping for treasures, and a list of folks participating in sale day was emailed to members and is also available at both gates.

Several Pecan groups will be fundraising by offering food for sale in the area adjacent to the front circle. Offerings will go fast; come early and come hungry.

WELCOME HOME

The next session of new member orientation comes Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. in the clubhouse ballroom. New Pecaners who have not attended a meeting are invited to join. Folks from Pecan’s Membership Committee will be on hand to greet new residents and answer questions about our neighborhood.

WOMAN’S CLUB

The next general meeting of the Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club (PPWC) will happen Thursday, Oct. 21 in the clubhouse ballroom. Social time begins at 9:30 a.m. with President Annelle Teal calling the meeting coming to order at 10.

Following the business meeting, ladies will hear from “The Silver Lady,” Bonny Edmonds, when she presents “Around the World in 80 Days with Cantinflas! - Mexico’s Famous Comedian.”

Lunch prepared by the clubhouse staff will be served, and silver jewelry created by Mexican artisans will be offered for sale. Reservations have all been made, and cancellations are due by Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Furthermore, at the Oct. luncheon, PPWC members may collect their 2021-2022 directories. The publication has a calendar of events for the year, as well as contact information for club members as they proceed with this year’s theme of “United in Friendship.” Ladies should see Gerta Howell in the clubhouse lobby on meeting day for directory pick up.

PAINT PARTY

Pecan resident and accomplished artist Heidi Easley will lead the instruction for a kids’ Halloween painting event on Sunday, Oct. 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the PAC. Artists ages five to 14 are invited to sign up as spots are limited: 817-573-7952. Participants will leave with a finished canvas painting of a Halloween scene.

SOCIAL TIME

The Entertainment Committee has two events on the calendar. First, Saturday, Oct. 23 holds a “MASH 4077 Camp” themed evening that will include a costume contest, trivia competition, music, and dancing. Attendees are encouraged to dress the part and might want to check out television “reruns” for attire ideas. Reservations for the evening are being taken now; call 817-573-2641 to secure a spot.

Friday, Oct. 29 will bring a “jam with Pecan” session at the golf pavilion from 7 to 11 p.m. Live music and karaoke will comprise the night. TAKE AIM

Pecan’s annual Halloween pumpkin shoot will happen on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at our community’s archery/air gun range. Residents ages eight through thirteen should sign up at the PAC to participate, and all partakers should be able to shoot independently as this is not a teaching event.

Word on the street is that abundant prizes composed of Halloween candy will be awarded when marksmen hit pumpkin targets.

SPOOKY SEASON

The PAC will be hosting a Halloween party and Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. The day will include a haunted house, crafts, costume contest, games, and a balloon animal-making clown. Many hands are needed for this task, and willing workers are welcome.

Trunk or treat will happen in the PAC parking lot, and volunteers are requested to hand out candy. Folks who would like to participate may sign up at the PAC. Members are welcome to bring both vehicles with candy-filled trunks or golf carts. Decorations and costumes for participants are encouraged.

Last year’s event was cancelled, but in previous years’ Halloween gatherings, more than 300 little ones have participated in the fun.
