Man accused of shooting girlfriend’s ex-husband

The sheriff says it happened after the victim dropped children off at his ex-wife's home in Milton.

UPDATE 10/19/21 @ 10:20 p.m.

Sheriff Chuck Zerkle says an arrest has been made in the shooting in Milton.

He says 29-year-old Shaquille Barnwell will be charged with two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony.

The sheriff says John Wells III went to his ex-wife’s house on Hayleigh Street to drop off their kids Tuesday evening.

He says there was an altercation inside the home between Wells and Barnwell, who is the boyfriend of Wells’ ex-wife.

The sheriff says Barnwell shot Wells twice, once in the chest.

Wells was taken to St. Mary’s and is undergoing surgery Tuesday night.

Barnwell will be spending the night in the Western Regional Jail and will be arraigned Wednesday, Zerkle says.

MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One man is in the hospital following a shooting Tuesday evening. That’s according to Cabell County Sheriff’s deputies.

Dispatchers tell WSAZ the call came in just after 6:00 p.m.

It happened on Hayleigh Street in Milton.

Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle says the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two men at a residence on Hayleigh Street.

The victim was shot in the chest, deputies say, and has been taken to the hospital. There is no word on his condition.

Investigators are processing the scene at this time.

Zerkle says the shooter and the victim knew each other. No arrests have been made at this time.
