The Cavaliers and Collin Sexton couldn’t come to terms on a rookie-scale contract extension ahead of the 6 p.m. deadline on Monday night’s, according to Chris Fedor of cleveland.com.

Sexton was hoping to net a contract north of $100 million that would match up with his production early on in his career

Multiple structures were discussed, including different lengths, incentives, unique clauses and bonuses.

Sexton has improved his averages all across the board ever since entering the league, as the Cavs have continuously referred to him as a core piece of their future.

“We have put a lot into Collin and working with him,” Bickerstaff said a few hours before the extension deadline. “As coaches, we kind of focus on the basketball piece of it. I will let (general manager) Koby (Altman) and his agent handle all of that. But we have put a lot of time into him. We believe in him. We would love to have him be a part of what we’re doing.”

Although they couldn’t come to an agreement, the Cavs still like Sexton, who can become a restricted free agent next offseason, and want him around.

They could opt to agree to an extension just before Sexton is eligible for restricted free agency, similar to what the Hawks did with John Collins.
