The Washington Football Team worked out a group of kickers on Tuesday. In the end, they’ve decided to re-sign Chris Blewitt to their practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

This will be Blewitt’s second stint in Washington this season. He was signed to the practice squad on Oct. 5. But, was cut on Oct. 13.

He worked out with the Indianapolis Colts in the meantime. Blewitt went undrafted in 2017 out of Pittsburgh. He has spent time in the Chicago Bears’ training camp. He also worked out with the New York Jets in August.

Blewitt has yet to kick in an NFL regular season game. He made 55-of-79 (69.6%) of his field goal attempts and 198-of-204 (97.1%) in four seasons at Pittsburgh.

Signing a kicker to the practice squad usually doesn’t move the needle. Except, in Washington the struggles of Dustin Hopkins over the past two seasons have eyes glued on the kicking situation.

Hopkins has missed two field goals, including a 42-yard attempt in Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He has also missed two extra points on the season, coming off his worst season in 2020 of his career.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera has maintained confidence in Hopkins. Bringing back Blewitt may have more to do with Washington’s schedule than need of replacing Hopkins.

Last week with a home game, Washington released Blewitt. But they’ll be on the road at Green Bay and at Denver the next two weeks. Bringing in an emergency kicker seems to be their plan.
