With numerous members of the coaching staff being let go and weeks having gone by since the Yankees’ season ending earlier than they hoped once again, Aaron Boone’s future as the manager appeared to be very much up in the air.

But as Boone laid out for Carton and Roberts on Monday, shortly after it was announced that he was remaining with the Yanks on a new three-year deal, the delay was simply logistical.

“I know right after our season, there was probably a week where it’s the end of the season and letting it breathe, and I know the front office and ownership was doing their due diligence,” Boone said. ”I had a conversation with Hal last Monday where we spoke for about 15-20 minute and he informed me that he wanted to have me back.”

For Boone, that talk with Steinbrenner was reinforcement of the team owner and general manager Brian Cashman’s words of support throughout the turbulent 2021 campaign.

“It was just a matter of my agent and Cash working out a deal, and we were able to get it done,” Boone said.

Had Boone not been brought back, there would have been plenty of potential landing spots, like the Padres or nearby Mets, but Boone is back in the Bronx, where he hopes to finally help the Yankees break through and reach the World Series, which they were on the cusp of accomplishing right before Boone arrived, and haven’t been able to reach that point since.

“I’m invested here,” Boone said. “Organizationally, I came here and left doing that I was doing because I wanted to get back into being a part of a team and in the game and have a chance to compete for a championship. We haven’t gotten to that point. That’s my driving force.

“In a way, it’s unfinished business. I still want to compete at the highest level and try to bring a championship.”
