'Don't doubt Davey': In-form Australian star Glenn Maxwell backs David Warner for T20 World Cup turnaround

In-form Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has urged fans, experts and rival players not to doubt David Warner, despite the opener's struggles in the recent IPL.

Warner was dropped by Sunrisers Hyderabad when the tournament resumed in the UAE, just weeks out from the all-important T20 World Cup.

The 34-year-old played just eight games in the IPL, and didn't feature in the back-half of the campaign, meaning he has played very little cricket since April this year.

Despite being left out of his IPL team, Warner has received the backing of Australian captain Aaron Finch, who expects the opener to bounce back in the World Cup.

Since those comments from Finch, Warner fell for a duck in the warm-up game for Australia against New Zealand, and pressure is now mounting on the superstar big-hitter.

But those who are doubting him should think twice, according to his Australian teammate Maxwell.

“It certainly wasn’t the perfect game, but it was a really good warm-up for the guys," he said.

"As for Davey – if you ever doubt Davey, that’s an absolute no-no.

"You know he is going to turn it around, he is a superstar of all three formats and has made so many runs.

"He is going to go down as one of the greats of the game. Unfortunately, he got Martin Guptill’d yesterday with an absolute hanger and Gups seems to do that a lot against us.

"Those sorts of things happen when you are searching for it, but you know when he gets out there come game-time, he is going to hit the ground running and is going to be a big player for us."

Warner is one of the most prodigious batsmen in T20 history, ever since he burst onto the scene for Australia back in 2008 with a blistering 89 against South Africa.

Maxwell believes the lack of cricket for players like Warner during the IPL, right before a huge World Cup, won't be a major issue.

“I’ve spoken to those guys and they feel ready," he said.

"They are all senior players the guys that have been over here, so I’m sure they’ve used the most of their time.

"They seem ready to go."

Maxwell comes into the tournament as one of the in-form players from the IPL season, scoring over 500 runs at an average of 42.75, and will certainly be a key factor in Australia's bid for their maiden T20 World Cup.

Another man who will be front and centre is Mitchell Marsh, who was the shining light in the recent tours of West Indies and Bangladesh and is hitting the ball 'better than anyone' according to Maxwell.

“I think Mitchell Marsh is going to have a massive tournament," he said.

"I don’t think I have seen anyone hit the ball better ever. We all gather around his nets and just watch him hit the ball, it has been pretty extraordinary to watch him go about his business at the moment.

"I’d be really surprised if he didn’t have a good tournament – he has got his bowling as well.

"His presence around the group, regardless of what he is doing is second-to-none. He is the guy that everyone wants in their team and he is flying at the moment."
