The CW is adding a pair of very different series to its roster: Leonardo, an Italian period drama about the secrets of Leonardo da Vinci, and Bump, an Australian comedy about teen pregnancy.
An eight-part series, Leonardo “follows da Vinci as he grows into an unparalleled genius [and] renowned polymath whose work overturned the established order,” according to the official logline. “His restless curiosity flitted between arts, science and technology, driven by a profound quest for knowledge and determined to unfold the mysteries of the world around him. The series unlocks the enigma of this extraordinary man, through an untold story of mystery and passion.”
The one-hour drama stars Aidan Turner (Poldark) in the title role, along with Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor) as Stefano Giraldi and Matilda de Angelis (The Undoing) as Caterina da Cremona, among others.
And then there’s Bump, a half-hour Australian dramedy about Oly (played by Nathalie Morris), a 17-year-old student with an ambitious 10-year plan: “top grades, international relations at a university, work for the UN, save the world.” But Oly’s plan starts to fall apart when she suddenly goes into labor, and she copes the only way she knows how. “If she doesn’t acknowledge the baby, then she doesn’t have to acknowledge how her life has irrevocably changed,” reads the official logline.
Complicating matters further, Oly’s boyfriend isn’t the baby’s father. That turns out to be Santi, who just so happens to be the son of Oly’s mother’s work crush. Oh, and did we mention that Oly and Santi’s parents work at their school? It’s messy! What unfolds is a complicated journey for Oly and Santi’s families, both of which were already falling apart at the seams before this new baby came into the picture.
Leonardo and Bump are the latest additions to The CW’s growing list of international acquisitions. Other series include the supernatural drama Coroner, the Patrick Dempsey thriller Devils; What We Do in the Shadows spinoff Wellington Paranormal, and the Tom Welling-Brendan Fraser action drama Professionals.
Premiere dates and other scheduling information will be announced at a later date. Do either of these international acquisitions tickle your fancy? Drop a comment with your thoughts on Leonardo and Bump below.
Both sound interesting but I’ll actually watch the DaVinci show.
Same. That synopsis for Bump sounds horrid so it will probably be a hit, lol.
Sounds like the CW is finally trying to get into the game.
The Da Vinci one sounds like something I would watch, and not at all like something that would be on the CW.
You must not watch The CW because period pieces like Reign are popular. I still think that ABC’s Star-Crossed would have survived at least a couple of seasons had it been sold to The CW.
If Reign was popular then the CW would allowed it to complete its 8 year plan instead of canceling it midway throughout that plan. Star Crossed could done so better on Netflix if that was its original network instead of ABC
I agree. unless they plan to drench the show in romance and drama like they did Reign(which I wouldn’t want) it’s a terrible fit for the network.
When is The CW ever going to air ‘Devils’ season 2?
Sky hasn’t even made season 2 yet.
I’m pretty sure it hasn’t started production for S2 yet
Anything with Freddie Highmore I will watch.
The CW was the last place I thought the Leornardo series would end up, but at least this way I’ll be able to watch it.
When I first saw the posting of Leonardo paired with Freddie Highmore’s picture I thought he was cast as Da Vinci!! (No offense to Highmore but Da Vinci was always described by his contemporaries and near-contemporaries as very tall and athletic looking).Aiden Park was quite good in Poldark.I’ll definitely check it out.
Ooops! Aiden Turner! Someday,TVLine will allow edits for errors……..someday!!
As an Australian Bump is pretty good. But I’m not sure how the American audiences will take it aha.
The same way they do with MTV 16 and Pregnant alongside Teen Mom.
I’ve seen it and love it. Americans watch tons of international TV. So many shows from other countries are available now. I’m American and watch more foreign content than American. The shows and actors are so much better
Freddie Highmore??? Does that mean The Good Doctor is cancelled??
Yes
No, The Good Doctor is not cancelled. This is a show that was made previously and with a limited number of episodes. The CW just got the rights to show it. The Good Doctor is not cancelled.
WHEW!
Leonardo was renewed for a second season
No. This was filmed last year primarily and has already aired internationally. The Good Doctor is safe from being cancelled due to this show.
I’ve actually been wanting to watch “Leonardo” but assumed it’d be on PBS, BBC America/AMC, etc., so this is a nice surprise. It’s already been renewed for a 2nd season too so I’m assuming The CW will have both seasons.
It’s a terrible show, which is why those other networks won’t touch it. It already aired in Europe.
Yeah, international co-productions get a lot of leeway on The CW. Worst case scenario, it ends up getting pushed to The CW Seed.
Summer fare at the CW… you never know what you might find.
I’ll watch anything with Aidan Turner!! I still miss Being Human.😢
New doctor on Chicago Med (Kristen Hagar) was also on Being Human. It really was a great show.
The British version was. The US version was just ok.
I loved Bump when it aired here in Australia. Hopefully the US audiences take to it as well but I do find our comedy doesnt always resident in the northern hemisphere.
Lol Coroner is not a supernatural show.
I watched some of the POLDARK on PBS it was good so i willl look at LEONARDO. Too much super heroes on the CW but they did air Swamp Thing and that was soooooo good but it got cancelled and was sent over from the DC streaming service. One fairy tale castle stories that ran long on ABC Once Upon A Time and that got i believe 6 seasons . . .
The CW will have to edit Leonardo and put commercials in it. They did that with The Swamp Thing.
Cannot wait for Leonardo.
When will Leonardo air in the US?????
Can you give us a release date for Leonardo? We’ve been waiting over a year since it was released in the UK and other counties. It’s frustrating
Does anyone know how many episodes of Leonardo will be shown I’ve looked and can’t find answer! Thanks
