Friendship is magic

The final major update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is here, bringing the roster of playable fighters to a staggering 82 with the addition of Sora from Kingdom Hearts. Ultimate’s new update also makes one fantasy reality: Isabelle from Animal Crossing can now hang out (and presumably fight, but I like to think she wouldn’t) the Doom Slayer from Doom.

Isabelle and Doomguy’s in-game meeting brings together the pair that fans of Animal Crossing and Doom have been platonically shipping for roughly the past 20 months. It all started when fans of each series realized that both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal were planned for release on the same day: March 20, 2020. Since then, fans have created fan art tributes to their friendly relationships, but the two are finally (sort of) meeting up in Smash.

Granted, Doom Slayer in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is limited to a Mii Fighter (Gunner) costume, but that’s not impacting fans celebrating the final payoff in any way.

Even Doom publisher Bethesda Softworks is getting in on it.
