Anna Netrebko Cancels ‘Nabucco’ in Vienna Due to Surgery

Anna Netrebko has canceled her role debut as Abigaille in “Nabucco” at the Wiener Staatsoper due to an urgent shoulder surgery.

The company announced that the soprano has an acute problem in her right shoulder that will force her to undergo an urgent operation. As a result, Netrebko will not appear at the Wiener Staatsoper this fall and noted a new singer for the Nov. 1, 6, 9 and 12 performances will be announced in the next few days.

Netrebko was also forced to cancel her Oct. 24 concert at the Musikverein. 

In a statement, the soprano said, “I have had debilitating shoulder pain for many months and my doctor advised me to urgently undergo an operation and then immediately start physical rehabilitation to resolve the problem. I am sorry to miss my dear Viennese audience this time, and I look forward to performing for you again very soon.”

Netrebko was originally set to make her role debut in “Nabucco” during the 2020-21 season at the Metropolitan Opera but performances were canceled due to the pandemic. She is set to appear in the role in 2022 at the Royal Opera House. The soprano is also set to expected to return to the stage in December for the opening night of the Teatro alla Scala.

“Nabucco” will star Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Plácido Domingo, Alessandro Liberatore, and Roberto Tagliavini. Paolo Carignani conducts.
