Aaron Boone’s future as Yankees manager hardly felt like a certainty after another early playoff exit, but the team announced Tuesday morning that Boone will still be in the dugout in 2022 and beyond.

The Yankees signed the four-year manager to a new three-year deal with a team option for 2025, committing to the 48-year-old who has tallied a 328-218 record as manager.

Despite Boone’s historic regular season win totals (he led the Yanks to back-to-back 100-win seasons as Yankee manager to begin his tenure), a 92-win campaign and a loss in the Wild Card Game to the hated Red Sox left the door open for change as Boone’s initial contract expired, but the Yanks elected to make changes to the coaching staff around him and stick with their current leader.

“We have a person and manager in Aaron Boone who possesses the baseball acumen and widespread respect in our clubhouse to continue to guide us forward,” Hal Steinbrenner said in Tuesday’s press release. “As a team and as an organization, we must grow, evolve and improve. We need to get better. Period. I know Aaron fully embraces our expectations of success, and I look forward to drawing on his intelligence, instincts and leadership in pursuit of our next World Series championship.”

Boone finished second in the American League Manager of the Year voting in 2019, when he won 103 games with a roster decimated by injuries, but the team was bounced in game six of the ALCS by the Astros.

Hitting coach Marcus Thames and third base coach Phil Nevin are gone, but Boone remains, and will be tasked with getting the Yankees past their high-water mark with this current core, which is one win away from a World Series berth back in 2017, the year before Boone arrived. They’ve been chasing that promise ever since, and some thought Boone was playing a big part in preventing the Yanks from getting there. The front office clearly disagrees, and will stick with Boone for the long haul.
