BECKLEY, W.V. (LOOTPRESS) – The Beckley Human Rights Commission recently made a request to the City of Beckley.
Dr. Kristi Dumas appeared on behalf of the commission, asking Beckley Common Council to rename South Fayette Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
“The honorary naming of the street is ceremonious and dedicating in nature,” Dr. Dumas stated, adding that it will require the city to place two new street signs below the street’s actual name: South Fayette Street.
“It will honor and recognize the life and accomplishments of Dr. King.”
This request is currently under review by Beckley City Attorney William File. File says that while he has no issue with granting the commission’s request, he must first check with the State of West Virginia.
According to File, South Fayette Street is part of Route 3, a road that belongs to the state and is maintained by the state.
“We are going to check with the state to make sure there’s no objection to naming a state road,” he said. “They control the signage of that road, so we just want to make sure there be no objection, no legal reason why that would create an issue.”
