Throughout the last couple of years, Nintendo had a firm grip on the wallets of US consumers. The Switch has been a hugely popular handheld, especially during the pandemic, but since 2018 the console has continued to fly off the shelves and into customers hands. It's taken years for anyone to topple this giant, but it's now happened, and the PlayStation 5 is the best-selling console of the month.
As reported by Mat Piscatella (via GamesRadar+), the PlayStation 5 has finally ended the Switch's run as the best-selling console in the USA. The NPD analyst took to Twitter to reveal that the PS5 topped the Switch. He says: "PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform of September in both units and dollars. PlayStation 5 is the best-selling hardware platform of 2021 year-to-date in dollars, while Nintendo Switch leads in units."

According to Piscatella the Switch has been on top since November 2018: "September 2021 snaps the remarkable 33 consecutive month streak that Nintendo Switch was the market's leading platform in hardware unit sales. November 2018 was the last month a platform other than Nintendo Switch led the market in unit sales (PlayStation 4)."

So PlayStation once again takes the throne, even with the shortages that Sony and the rest of the tech industry have been suffering over the last couple of years. If it hadn't been for the superconductor shortage, it's likely that Nintendo's streak wouldn't have lasted this long, and would have been broken with the release of the new-gen consoles late last year.
Will Switch re-take the top spot? That may well depend on Sony's supply chain right now. But with the Switch's new OLED variation, perhaps we'll see it all change once again in the lead up to Christmas.
