Many of us have probably snuggled with a quilt at some point in our lives or received a quilt from a relative that was carefully passed down from generation to generation. Stories may have been stitched into quilts, while some quilts commemorate special occasions or mark milestones in a person’s life.
The tradition of quilting is kept alive by crafters today with their amazing display of these heirloom pieces. The Crossroads Arts Council in Wentzville Missouri is getting ready to host the sixth annual “Pieces of the Heart’ Quilt Show, Oct. 14 – 16th at the Wentzville Community Club.
Features of the quilt show include the Missouri Bicentennial Quilt Challenge where each participant is challenged to use the same fabric design to create their own mini-quilt.
An annual favorite of guests is the antique quilt ‘bed turning’. Bed turnings began as social gatherings of friends to celebrate the completion of their quilts. Each quilt is stacked on top of another and then turned back as the owner describes the pieced pattern, and quilted design.
These traditions have continued at this show to help recognize the art of quilting. So make sure you take the time to come and view some of the most beautiful quilts in the area while capturing a bit of history.
