Dan Lam On Curating a “Sensory Auction” For Bombay Sapphire, Future Projects, Music & More

Best known for her “drippy” sculptures and use of vibrant color, using non-traditional materials of polyurethane foam, acrylic paint and epoxy resin, Dan Lam’s finished work often dangles over shelf ledges, contrasting emotions of desire and disgust. The Dallas, Texas-based artist — whose celebrity fans include Miley Cyrus and Lily Aldridge — is the most recent high-profile artist to take part in Bombay Sapphire’s Stir Creativity campaign, as launched by Bombay Sapphire in 2018.

As part of her collaboration with Bombay Sapphire, Lam has curated the first ever “Sensory Auction” in advance of International Gin & Tonic Day on October 19, 2021. Lam designed a bespoke artwork inspired by the Bombay & Tonic. This sculpture draws inspiration from the iconic drink, from the way that the vibrant flavor of Bombay Sapphire Gin dances on your tongue, to the citrus-forward aroma making a grand introduction to your nose, and the finale of the unique vapor-infused botanicals stimulating your tastebuds, set to the backdrop of the playful fizz of tonic whispering to your ears. And that one-of-a-kind artwork will be auctioned to the person with the strongest sensory reaction to it by way of an electroencephalogram, also known as “EEG technology”; this advanced technology measures the brain’s reactions to art, music or any object that can give rise to aesthetic judgments.

On October 14, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dan Lam via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond her unique collaboration with Bombay Sapphire, we spoke about her journey to becoming an in-demand artist after studying Fine Arts at Arizona State University, where her inspiration often comes from, and whether she likes people using the term “drippy” to describe her artwork. More on Lam and her work with Bombay Sapphire can be found by clicking here, here, here and here.
