Louis F. Velasquez, 75, Enjoyed Biking and Walking

Photo of Louis F. Velasquez Louis F. Velasquez, 75, of Lorain, died unexpectedly on Saturday October 16, 2021 at his home.

He was born September 16, 1946 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain resident.

Lou graduated from Admiral King High School in 1965. He worked at American Shipbuilding for two years then worked at US Steel as a certified welder in maintenance before retiring after 35 years. He also worked as an usher at Progressive Field for Cleveland Indians games for over 18 years where he got to personally know many of the season ticket holders in his section.

For many years, Lou competed in summer biathlons biking and running. He enjoyed biking along Lake Erie from Cleveland to Sandusky as well as walking as much as 9 miles per day. Lou coached Lorain Youth Baseball and Softball and enjoyed playing golf and league bowling. He was awarded the Lorain County Sheriff’s Award for most pins over average during the Lorain USBC Bowling Association men’s city tournament. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Elizabeth “Betty” Velasquez (née Kenzik), children: Louis J. Velasquez (Terri), Michael A. Velasquez (Lisa), Charles A. Velasquez and John A. Velasquez, all of Lorain, grandchildren: Jackie Prosak (Ben), Natalie, Anthony, Collin A., Brandon & MaKayla Velasquez, all of Lorain; great grandchildren: Nicholas & William Prosak; siblings: Christina Rios of Ft Worth, Texas, Joseph Velasquez of Orlando, Florida, Rosario “Rosie” Epps of Charlotte, North Carolina, Thomas Velasquez and Theresa Velasquez, both of Seattle, Washington, Mary McBride of Ft Worth, Texas, Raphael Velasquez of Columbus, David Velasquez of Miami, Florida, Julia Ann Taylor of Texas, Peter Velasquez and Guadalupe Velasquez, both of Columbus and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Juan & Socorro Velasquez (nee Jacinto) and siblings: Juan, Richard, Phillip, Martin and Francis Velasquez and Juanita Jiminez.

The family will receive friends Thursday October 21, 2021 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. The family requests all visitors to wear masks. Funeral services will be held Friday October 22, 2021 at 11:00 am in the funeral chapel. The Rev. Edgar Gonzales, deacon at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, will preside. Cremation will follow.
