SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Police say a man opened the door to his apartment with a firearm pointed at officers investigating a report that a man had threatened another person with a firearm in the drive-thru of a McDonald's restaurant early Sunday morning.
Officers used de-escalation tactics to coninvce the man to surrender, Springfield Police said.
The situation started with a report at 4:26 a.m. on October 17 of menacing with a firearm at the McDonald's on Gateway Street.
"It was reported that a man in a black Dodge Charger threatened another person in the drive-thru with a handgun," police said. "The suspect left the area after receiving his order."
The license plate of the car led police to an apartment in east Springfield.
"When officers arrived at the residence, they were met at the front door by the suspect who was holding a firearm and pointing it in the direction of the officers," police said. "The officers put their de-escalation training to work and tried to get the suspect to put the gun down. The suspect refused to drop the firearm and slammed the door on the officers."
According to police:
"Officers secured the area around the residence and continued to try to deescalate the situation by contacting the suspect on his cell phone. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Consavi Gavin Savath, eventually surrendered to police but denied having possessed any firearms. The other three adults inside the apartment were contacted but refused to cooperate."
Detectives obtained a search warrant from Lane County Circuit Court for the residence.
"During service of the warrant for the apartment, police found an AR style rifle, four black semi-automatic pistols, and multiple magazines and ammunition," police said.
Officers arrested Savath on suspicion of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Menacing and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He was also taken into custody on a parole warrant for Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Assault 3.
