Cade Cunningham participated in some of the Detroit Pistons’ practice on Monday as he continues to recover from a right ankle injury, head coach Dwane Casey said.

The update from Casey offered another positive sign Cunningham is progressing toward a return to the court. Casey on Sunday said Cunningham is on course to play in the regular-season opener on Wednesday versus the Chicago Bulls.

However, Casey said the Pistons will not rush him back too quickly.

He went through some of the practice today, but, for me, it’s about his health and his longevity. (We shouldn’t) be stupid and force him out there and now you’re out another month. We want to be cautious. We want to make sure he gets as many practices in as he can. It’s a day-by-day thing. If he’s not ready, he’s not ready. We’re not going to put a timetable on it.

Cunningham turned his ankle in the first week of training camp and has been unable to fully participate in practice. The Pistons have treated the injury with extreme caution and opted to hold him out of the preseason to allow him to recover.

On Monday, Cunningham was seen shooting after practice wrapped, via Rod Beard of the Detroit News.

Despite the setback, Casey said last week Cunningham is remaining positive and upbeat in film sessions and practice. The team is confident Cunningham will be able to pick up things quickly once he can be cleared to play.

Cunningham experiencing an injury during his first training camp has likely been very frustrating, but the 20-year-old has handled the situation very well. Certainly, the Pistons and Cunningham can’t wait until he can take the court again.
