WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
Before the release of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, many fans were wondering if this film would have anything to do with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Another question was if it would have any correlation to the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, due for release this December.
I thought it would be very similar to the first Venom movie, which was an average superhero film with some cool and exciting moments. I also went in thinking that the new characters to be introduced would make a big impact on the franchise. I do have to say though, I did go into the theater hoping for some sort of tease of the MCU.
To start, the plot of this movie is very similar to that of the first in the franchise. Eddie Brock, played by Tom Hardy, still has his love/hate relationship with the Venom symbiote that lives in him. Brock also continues to deal with his failed romantic relationship with Anne Weying, played by Michelle Williams. This part of the movie really drags it down as a whole because it was too similar to the first film and boring to see again. The one major element that separated this film from the first is when Venom leaves Brock. There are a few funny moments that occur here, but the comedy does not always land.
The relationship I did like in this movie, however, was Eddie Brock and serial killer Cletus Kasady, played by Woody Harrelson. Harrelson was tremendous in this film. Every time he and Brock were on the screen together, it was captivating. Kasady later merges with the Carnage symbiote after biting Brock’s hand. Carnage helps Kasady escape prison to find his lost lover, Shriek, played by Naomie Harris. This is where the movie really gets going.
Carnage looked amazing in this film. The design was perfect, and all of the tendrils coming off it made it look terrifying. The fight scene between Carnage and Venom is one of my personal favorite fight scenes in a superhero movie in a long time. The CGI was flawless and the action was so exciting. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. When Venom finally came out on top, it seemed like he really earned the victory.
I thought this whole fight scene really carried the movie, until I saw the post credit scene.
As per any Marvel production, there was a post credit scene to this movie and it may have been the most important post credit scene of all time. In this scene, we see the aftermath of Dr. Strange’s spell from the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” trailer. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is shown, and now Venom is officially part of the MCU. This will likely set him up to be the final member of the Sinister Six in the upcoming Spider-Man movie in December.
