‘The Lost Daughter’ Trailer: No Day At The Beach For Olivia Colman In Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Directorial Debut

The Lost Daughter

Netflix on Monday released the trailer for The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut that also won her best screenplay honors after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The pic starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and Dakota Johnson is gearing up for its theatrical release December 17, followed by its bow on Netflix on December 31 in the heart of awards season.

Adapted by Gylllenhaal from Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novel, the pic centers on Leda (Olivia Colman), who during her seaside vacation becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.

At Deadline’s recent Contenders London event, Johnson called the film “really raw, open and messy. It felt so human, like the truth of being a human woman.”

Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Dagmara Dominczyk, Paul Mescal, Alba Rohrwacher, Jack Farthing, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Panos Koronis, Robyn Elwell, Ellie Blake and Athena Martin also star in the film, which was shot in Greece in 2020. It has been making the fall festival rounds, playing at Telluride, New York and London among others.

Producers are Osnat Handelsman Keren, Talia Kleinhendler, Gyllenhaal and Charles Dorfman.

Netflix, in addition to a host of previously set worldwide territories, also on Monday also acquired rights to The Lost Daughter in the UK, Benelux and Germany.
