CHARLOTTE — Emergency crews had to shut down a portion of Interstate 77 for several hours on Monday following a deadly crash involving an overturned tanker truck.

First responders were called just before 11:30 a.m. to the scene in the northbound lanes of I-77, near Woodlawn Road.

The northbound lanes were closed and traffic was backed up for miles. Motorists heading southbound were only getting by in one lane.

MEDIC said one person was killed in the crash and another was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see the dry-bulk tanker on its side. Two other vehicles looked to also be involved in the wreck.

Traffic was being diverted off the interstate at Tyvola Road and drivers were being urged to avoid the area. The interstate reopened before 5 p.m.

No other details have been released.
