Charlevoix at Mt. Morris

MT. MORRIS — The Charlevoix volleyball team picked up some great competition over the weekend when they traveled to the annual Mt. Morris Invite.

The Rayders advanced their way to the semifinal round of bracket play before eventually falling to Carleton Airport.

“What I like about this tournament is each team really attacked different parts of our court and each zone really learned a lot defensively and tried to problem solve on the move,” Charlevoix coach Audra Randall said. “Overall we competed well, we learned, we are stronger in many ways but also know we need to work on keeping our tempo and attitude of ‘us’ as a team to be more consistent.  The talent is there on this Rayder team, but we have to continue to grow together as a team and carry that to our postseason.”

In pool play, Charlevoix opened with a loss to South Lyon East, falling 25-22 and 25-22, then split with Everest Collegiate in a 25-22 loss again, then a 25-9 win.

The final pool play game came as a win over Plymouth Christian, as they dropped a 25-22 opener, then earned a 25-19 win.

In the opening round of pool play, the Rayders met Freeland to start and dropped a 25-13 first set. They then rebounded with a 25-17 victory, sending it to extras, where they came through with a 15-11 victory.

Carleton Airport then topped the Rayders by scores of 25-23 and 25-19 in the semifinals.

Grace Lentz finished the day with 55 kills, nine blocks and went 54 of 55 on serve receive.

“Grace had a great day, really leading her team throughout the whole day,” added Randall. “She has such a nice demeanor on the team and everyone enjoys what a dedicated and hard working teammate she is everyday.”

Claire Scholten added 93 assists, 47 digs and six kills, Patria Muriel went 63 of 67 on serve receptions and had 56 digs, Anna Haf had 23 digs, 10 kills and three aces, Taylor Petrosky had 20 digs, 17 kills and 36 serve receptions, while Kylie Rice had 36 digs and eight aces.

Charlevoix next wraps up LMC play with a visit from Grayling Tuesday.
