Week in review: Lane County's COVID cases fall 12.7%; Oregon cases drop 18.6%

Oregon reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 7,653 new cases. That's down 18.6% from the previous week's tally of 9,404 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 9.7% from the week before, with 593,153 cases reported. With 1.27% of the country's population, Oregon had 1.29% of the country's cases in the last week.

Oregon ranked 31st among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.

Across the country, 12 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Oregon reported a "death data reconciliation" on Oct. 12, giving the state a single-day record number of deaths. Week-to-week comparisons will be inaccurate.

Lane County reported 679 cases and 15 deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 778 cases and 12 deaths. Throughout the pandemic Lane County has reported 26,966 cases and 298 deaths.

Across Oregon, cases fell in 28 counties, with the best declines in Multnomah County, with 595 cases from 1,009 a week earlier; in Marion County, with 734 cases from 905; and in Linn County, with 404 cases from 569.

Even so, adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 734 cases; Deschutes County, with 689 cases; and Lane County, with 679.

Weekly case counts rose in eight counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Benton, Josephine and Tillamook counties.

Oregon ranked 19th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 67.6% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 65.9%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Oregon reported administering another 94,963 vaccine doses, including 19,150 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 120,322 vaccine doses, including 25,663 first doses. In all, Oregon reported it has administered 5,448,492 total doses.

Within Oregon, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Wheeler County — which was the last county in Oregon to report a pandemic case — with 1,201 cases per 100,000 per week; Crook County with 754; and Harney County with 663. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

In Oregon, 179 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 167 people were were reported dead.

A total of 348,766 people in Oregon have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 4,161 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 44,933,336 people have tested positive and 724,317 people have died.

Daily COVID data in Lane County

Lane County reported 83 confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 on Monday raising the countywide case count to 27,353. The death toll remained at 294.

There were 590 people considered infectious, down nearly 5% from Sunday's 620.

There were 45 hospitalized in Lane County on Monday, down one from Sunday, with 14 in intensive care and seven on ventilators, both unchanged from Sunday.

As of Sunday, 251,438 people in Lane County, 65.93% of the total population, had received first or second vaccine doses with 488,265 first and second doses administered in Lane County, according to the Oregon Health Authority.
