What is chronic pain? Professor Bill Elder, chair of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, explains and teaches us what we can do about it.

“Pain is considered chronic when it persists beyond normal recovery time, about 3 months, and when its level is greater than expected given actual tissue damage. Physical deconditioning, anxiety, and reduced activities are common and can, spiral into depression. Opioid medications, effective if used briefly, can increase sensitivity to pain.”

Here are some tips:

  1. Stay Active: Gentle regular activity like yoga or stretches can strengthen muscles, improve mood and ease pain. Consult your doctor.
  2. Pace Yourself: Plan activities for a balanced day. Take a break before pain level is too high.
  3. Focus on improving what you can do, not your pain level.

“Talk with your doctor about how to improve your condition and be healthy.”
