Monday night’s NHL action is highlighted by a classic Original Six matchup between one team that has extremely high expectations taking on a young, but tougher team looking to be more competitive, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New York Rangers.
After playoff disappointment for the past five seasons, the Leafs are going to try and right those wrongs with an altered roster this season. They have had an inauspicious start to this season, as they kicked things off with a hard-earned win against the Montreal Canadiens, but dropped a 3-2 decision to the Ottawa Senators in game two. The good news for Toronto, is that defending Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews is returning to the lineup after recovering from wrist surgery.
The Rangers have not had the best of starts this season. Despite bolstering their lineup with tough guys that is supposed to bring grit to the lineup. However, it has not paid off on the scoreboard thus far. After getting embarrassed in their season opener against the Washington Capitals, New York stumbled to an overtime loss to the Dallas Stars. The young goaltending core needs to bail out the team if they want to be successful this season.
