The Tychy Falcons of the Polish Football League have announced the signing of Washington State native Augie Stevens as their new head coach.
Stevens commented on joining the 2021 Polish vice-champions:
“The opportunity to lead a championship-caliber team like the Falcons feels absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to get back to Tychy and meet the staff and players this week. It is such a unique opportunity to take the reigns of an established, successful program with beautiful facilities and an excellent community behind it. Most head coach jobs open up when programs are dealing with adversity, situations where they need to rebuild. Obviously, quite the opposite here and it was something I couldn’t pass up.”
The 32-year-old from Mount Vernon, Washington, a graduate of Washington State University, was serving as coordinator for the Ravensburg Razorbacks of the German Football League. Stevens’s play-calling this summer, helped Ravensburg score 28 points and gain 370 yards per game, good for the fifth-ranked offense in the league.
Stevens takes over a Tychy program full of talent and experience. The Falcons made run at the title this season falling just short in the championship game. Despite a series of injuries, the southern Polish team kept a professional approach and remained legitimate contenders in the Polish Football League. Stevens commented on the culture within the Falcons program:
“The professional approach, transparency, and generosity of the management was a big factor. Tychy itself is a wonderful small city with a vibrant and growing community.”
Despite his young age, the Falcons are getting a seasoned veteran in Stevens who has logged 15 years as a coach. Prior to signing with the Razorbacks, Stevens had been hired as head coach of the Catalan Grizzlys in France and the Znojmo Knights in the Austrian first division but had both seasons canceled due to the pandemic.
He had been head coach of the Pribram Bobcats in the Czech league in 2019 in Division 1, leading them to a 4-4 season. Prior to arriving in Europe, Stevens was the running backs coach at Lindsey Wilson College (NAIA) (2016-17) helping the team to an 11-2 record with the starting running back earning All-Conference honors. He also had stints coaching high school football in Washington state and also at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana (Div III).
Stevens had a promising football and track career at Washington State before suffering a career-ending injury.
