Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea celebrated his 59th birthday on Saturday with the help of a few friends, including fellow RHCP band member John Frusciante, Cory Henry, John Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Kamasi Washington, and more. John Frusciante, Flea, and friends performed a show at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, which also came as a celebration for the non-profit organization’s 20th year of operation.

In a clip that initially surfaced online thanks to Instagram user @portalrhcp, Flea, Frusciante, and a smattering of other musicians can be seen performing a cover of The Meters‘ “Just Kissed My Baby” from the LA parking lot. The video sees Flea slapping his bass alongside Cory Henry, who slapped the keys on his organ just the same. Fishbone‘s John Norwood Fisher held down the vocal responsibilities on the tune, which initially appeared on The Meters’ 1971 album, Rejuvenation.

Though the short video doesn’t capture the entire song, it does capture a quite funky solo from John Frusciante, who stretches the length of his Fender fretboard atop basslines from Flea and a bevy of horns in the background.

Considering Red Hot Chili Peppers just announced a world tour that will see them perform in arenas and stadiums across Europe and North America, it’s quite the treat to see them playing music in front of a crowd that couldn’t have totaled more than a couple hundred people.

Check out a video of John Frusciante, Flea, and friends performing a cover of The Meters’ “Just Kissed My Baby” below.
