Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham continues to recover from a right ankle injury and could play on Wednesday in the regular-season opener against the Chicago Bulls, head coach Dwane Casey said.

Cunningham turned his ankle in practice two weeks ago and has been unable to fully participate in training camp. The Pistons have treated the injury with extreme caution and opted to hold him out of the preseason to allow him to recover.

Casey on Sunday offered some positive news regarding the injury.

He is on course (to play on Wednesday). He is working. We’re all on the same page with his people. With Cade, he is on course. We’re going to wait and hold out. One thing we’re not going to do, if he is not 100% we’re not going to rush him back out there where he can get reinjured and be out more time. We’ll see where everyone is by Wednesday and make that proclamation come Wednesday.

The injury has cost Cunningham valuable time on the court during practice and preseason games. He has been with the team and is taking notes, but Casey has stressed the importance of going through the plays and sets during a game setting.

Despite the setback, Casey said last week Cunningham is remaining positive and upbeat in film sessions and practice. The team is confident Cunningham will be able to pick up things quickly once he can be cleared to play.

Cunningham experiencing an injury during his first training camp has likely been very frustrating but the 20-year-old has handled the situation very well. Certainly, the Pistons and Cunningham can’t wait until he can take the court again.
