Spoiler alert: We’re about to break down the Season 3 finale of Netflix’s YOU. Haven’t watched yet? You’ve been warned.
The City of Lights just got a whole lot darker. YOU’s third season finale found Joe Goldberg saying adios to Madre Linda and bonjour to Paris, where he hopes to start yet another new life, this time with his librarian lover Marienne.
“Every season of the show is new place, a new conversation about love with a lowercase L,” show runner Sera Gamble tells TVLine. “I would be excited to do a European season. I think that would be so fun. One of the questions we always ask on this show is, What pool of privileged douchebags do we want to throw Joe into next? And there are a lot of untapped pools around the world, if you just leave the borders of the United States.”
Joe may be certain that he’s found the key to his happy ending — for real this time, he means it! — but Penn Badgley isn’t so sure that his character won’t revert back to his old tricks.
“I think if Joe finds Marienne, he’ll live happily ever after and have beautiful babies. He’ll learn to speak French, he’ll become a writer, they’ll spend a lot of time along the Seine and they’ll send their kids to school in Sweden,” Badgley jokes. “No, I think Joe will remain the same. Someone this profoundly ill, disturbed, traumatized and violent has a serious hurdle before them if they’re ever going to heal and change. I don’t know if it’s possible for someone who’s that far gone.”
Gamble very much echoes that sentiment, telling us, “I keep joking that he could just open a dog rescue, but I don’t really know what the twists and turns would be there. I think of the characters on this show as mirrors of each other. Love is in many ways a very accurate mirror of Joe. In another way, so is Marienne. In some ways, they came from a very similar background. I think ‘soulmates’ is a problematic term, but I do think that in a world where he wasn’t quite so unhinged, yes, they could really support each other. They really understand difficult things that people from the outside judge.”
Are you hoping that YOU’s fourth season, which was confirmed by Netflix earlier this week, will take place in Paris? And are you hoping to see more of Marienne in Joe’s future? Grade the finale and season below, then drop a comment with your thoughts.
First…at least the tv line header today did not give away the plot like yesterday’s….Geez!!
I liked the season but felt it had a couple too many arcs. I didn’t see Joe’s obsession w Marianne coming but think.she may have been the most mature and right match for him. So much of this season was focused on Love it will be interesting to see what will fuel that tension next season. I was so.glad Theo did not die…he was pretty innocent. The whole swingers story w the Sherry and Cary was out of left field but I guess necessary for Loves realization that Joe was obsessed w someone new. It’s tough to show empathy for Joe when he unnecessarily kills anyone he has a conflict with…the Ryan killing was not necessary. Good season and better diversity. Will miss Love as she carried many scenes.
Season 3 was better than 2. I really enjoyed it. Quirky, funny and at times, poignant. Definitely do not want to see Marienne again. I liked her character and would absolutely lose all respect for her if she took Joe back. He is, after all, supposed to be dead. If not, then that ‘confession’ note would be suspect, and she shouldn’t trust him.
Season 4 is unnecessary, should have ended it at Season 3.
As long as the series ends with Joe’s death at the hands of any woman, I’ll be good.
When reading the [Spoiler] in the title, why did my brain immediately fill in that blank with [Space]?
I really thought Joe and Love were perfect for each other. I was a little bummed she died but WHO knows she might be alive…. BUMBUMBUUUUM
Sounds like Marienne is confirmed to be coming back then . . . I don’t know how I feel about that. I think I would prefer she gets away and never sees him again. It won’t end well for her if she does, and she has a daughter. I would prefer Joe goes looking for her, and then Joe gets distracted, as Joe does. Fairly easily, at that.
.
I guess we’ll never see Ellie again? Seems like a rather big hanging plot thread, but now that he’s faked his death, and Love is dead, he has no need to want to keep her quiet. Still, he might continue to feel responsible for her and send her money anyway. She’d know he’s alive if he does that . . . but heck, she probably knows anyway. She’s a smart girl. They only found his toes!
As long as no marianne. She just felt like she didnt even belong in the season.
Also – season 4 could be canceled and i think us fans would be okay with it. Everything is technically wrapped up. We know Joe will always run/change identities forever lol.
“Season 4 could be cancelled ”
Really?
What makes you think so?
s2 And S3 were amazing; but mainly due to Loves character. The show is electrifying watching the 2 of them. The show has depth it didn’t have in S1. S4 will fall flat without Love- this show needs her badly. Not intrigued by Marianne at all. The best plot for S4 is to have Joe and Love simultaneously living their disturbed lives in separate cities with Love being cleared of everything, getting Henry, and looking for revenge with Joe. Love has become THE show with Joe.
I liked S1 as it showed us just how far Joe would go. S2 and 3 gave us two seasons to develop the Love character. She has much more depth than Beck. The writers do like to bring back characters that we thought were dead. I do see Love stalking Joe though Paris.
It would be amazing if she killed Joe. She would also make a great new lead.
