Ben Simmons practices with 76ers as saga takes another turn

It was only a practice — we’re talking about practice — but Ben Simmons was finally at one on Sunday.

After holding out for most of training camp while seeking a trade, Simmons practiced with the 76ers on Sunday, three days ahead of their season opener.

“He was just one of the players,” coach Doc Rivers told reporters. “It was good overall. He was in and out.”

The three-time All-Star had finally reported to the team on Monday — surprising the organization with his timing, ESPN reported — after not yet getting the trade he was hoping for. It still remains to be seen whether he will actually suit up in another game for the 76ers, after a summer of reports that his relationship with the team was damaged perhaps beyond repair.

Rivers said he didn’t know yet whether Simmons would be ready to play Wednesday when the 76ers open their season against the Pelicans.

“I’m going to wait and see,” Rivers said. “Conditioning, just watching him, I thought he was in decent shape. Still not obviously game shape. … Right now, I’m just trying to get him back comfortable and integrated.

“When he’s ready, he’ll play.”
