Rafa Benitez was short Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison, Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph all due to injuries, but Seamus Coleman and Alex Iwobi returned and Lucas Digne was deemed fit after picking up a knock during the international break.

The Blues struggled to make an impression in the game as the visitors dominated possession. Both teams made good chances, but in the end it was the visitors that got the goal from a setpiece with the Blues defence caught wanting.

The Toffees simply did not have the quality to create a goal late on and suffered their second loss of the season, both of which have come without the Blues able to score.
