The sporting director’s contract expires next year, but Klopp did not provide any updates.

News emerged a couple of months ago that Liverpool’s Sporting Director Michael Edwards - a fan favourite - could depart at the end of this season when his contract expires.

Jurgen Klopp was asked to comment on it this week, but he did not seem concerned by the rumour, the Liverpool Echo reports. This was his response:

“What kind of story is that now!? We talk about the contract of the sporting director which expires next year? We’ve worked together for six years and I don’t think I’ve had a different sporting director.

“But it’s not my decision to do these kinds of things, so I don’t know. You need to ask other people about this, but over contracts, we don’t discuss, right. So I will not start now with the sporting director.

“That’s really interesting, I’ve never spoken before about the contract of a sporting director. If it was my point of view, if it expires next year, which I didn’t know exactly, I will think about that next year and not now.”

Edwards joined the club in 2011, and was promoted to his current role in 2016. Since then he has overseen some of the smartest business done by not only Liverpool, but any club before, investing in key players, and selling fringe players for more than they were possibly rated. Liverpool’s recent Premier League and Champions League success can be attributed in part to his talents, and one hopes that he will either sign a new contract, or be replaced by someone as competent.
