Postgame review: Jaguars end losing streak, beat Dolphins in London on Matthew Wright kick

USA TODAY-Florida Network

TOTTENHAM, England — Welcome to England, where the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars will kick off at 2:30 p.m. local time, or 9:30 a.m. in Florida.

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is expected to start after missing three games with fractured ribs. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will make the sixth start of his NFL career.

It's about 61 degrees Fahrenheit at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where journalists have an incredible midfield seat, outdoors, and about 30 rows up from the field.

There are tons of Dolphins and Jaguars supports in the UK and they have traveled great distances to attend. There should be more than 61,000 in the crowd.

Follow along with our reporters throughout the morning.

4:30 p.m. |  Don't blame this loss on Tua Tagovailoa

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa passed for 329 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's devastating 23-20 loss to the Jaguars. He had one bad mistake, but otherwise he was great in his return.

4:15 p.m. |  Who needs style points? Despite miscues, Jaguars are finally winners

In many ways, the Jaguars didn’t change a whole lot on Sunday.

The defense still can’t seem to find the opposition’s tight end if he had a GPS tracker in his helmet. The Jaguars' offensive coaching staff still can’t seem to find the right play call for fourth-and-short.  There were four false start penalties and one for the offense having 12 players in the huddle.  |  Read more --Garry Smits

2:43 p.m. |  Back home in Jacksonville, Jaguars fans cheered long-awaited win

The tension was palpable at Culhane's Irish Pub on Sunday as Ross Matiscik snapped the ball, Logan Cooke placed it on the ground and Matthew Wright stepped into a 53-yard field goal-attempt as the single second left the Jaguars' game against Miami in London expired.

1:53 p.m. |  Social media reacts to Dolphins' stunning loss

After losing 23-20 on a last-second field goal to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who hadn't won since Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season, the Dolphins are 1-5 in what promised to be a season that ended with a potential playoff berth. Fans and NFL experts on social media have some questions.

1:03 p.m. |  The streak is over: Jaguars beat Dolphins on Matthew Wright field goal

Urban Meyer kept his arms folded unsure what he was about to see from his kicker Matthew Wright.

However, as soon as Meyer saw Wright's 53-yard attempt sailed through the middle of the uprights he raised his arms and his players raced from the sideline in joy.

Finally, the Jaguars are a winner.  |  Read more --John Reid

12:48 p.m. |  THE STREAK IS OVER: Jaguars 23, Dolphins 20

Matthew Wright has done it.

The Jaguars nailed a 9-yard pass from Trevor Lawrence to Laviska Shenault, making a first down at the 36 and consuming only 4 seconds. Matthew Wright came on and converted from 53 yards.

Trevor Lawrence is now a winner in the NFL. For the first time in 21 games... Jaguars win.

12:46 p.m. |  Decision time for Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence is sacked on first and second down but finds Laviska Shenault on third down. Ball is at the 46. Fourth down and five seconds left...

12:42 p.m. | Stuffed: Josh Allen makes stop, Jaguars take over on downs at midfield

Rayshawn Jenkins made the third-down stop to deny the Dolphins shy of the sticks, and on fourth down, Brian Flores called for the offense on fourth-and-1. It didn't work: Josh Allen led the charge to stack up Malcolm Brown at the Miami 47. The chains: Short.

The Jaguars take over on downs, tied 20-20, 1:42 to go.

12:37 p.m. | TWO-MINUTE WARNING

Here's the situation.

Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins are driving, nearing midfield. They'll have a second-and-6 play once the teams emerge from the two-minute warning. The Dolphins and Jaguars are tied 20-20 in London, as the Jaguars fight to end their 20-game losing streak.

12:33 p.m. |  Field goal Jaguars: Matthew Wright ties it up

Trevor Lawrence brought the Jaguars upfield quickly, including an expert strike to Marvin Jones across midfield. The drive stalled out. Facing fourth-and-5, Urban Meyer summoned kicker Matthew Wright.

The result... a kick that started right, drifted toward the left and dropped between the uprights. Tie game. Now, it's Tua Tagovailoa's turn.

Jaguars 20, Dolphins 20, 3:40 4th.

12:25 p.m. |  Miami challenges again: Was that a Dolphins touchdown? Refs say no

Huge challenge now. Jaguars punt returner Jamal Agnew leaned toward the bouncing punt at the Jacksonville 7, and came close — very close — to touching it. Miami proceeded to down it in the end zone. Officials ruled a touchback. But if Agnew touched it, that's a Dolphins touchdown. Brian Flores heaves the flag again.

Officials rule in Jacksonville's favor again, and the Dolphins are out of challenge. Trevor Lawrence goes to work with 6:39 to go, at his own 20.

12:20 p.m. |  Miami loses challenge, Jaguars to regain football

A big challenge in the fourth quarter. Did Myles Gaskin catch that pass at midfield? Officials initially called a catch, then waved it off, ruling that Gaskin used the ground to secure the ball. Dolphins coach Brian Flores threw the challenge flag, but officials ruled in Jacksonville's favor. That means a punt with less than seven minutes to go.

12:06 p.m. | Touchdown Dolphins: Tua leads 90-yard drive, Miami back in front

Tua Tagovailoa wasted no time after that fourth-down stand from Miami's D. The Dolphins quarterback led Miami on a 90-yard drive, slicing through the Jaguars' drive with little real resistance. Mike Gesicki continues to punish the Jacksonville secondary.

To end the drive, Tagovailoa passed short to Jaylen Waddle, who reached the football across the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown. Ten minutes to go, Miami is back in front and the Jaguars' losing streak is close to adding another defeat — this one outside the United States.

Dolphins 20, Jaguars 17, 10:22 4th.

11:58 a.m. |  Fourth-down rush fails for Jaguars

If the Jaguars go on to lose this game, Urban Meyer's decision here will be discussed for a while.

Facing fourth-and-2 around the 10, Meyer passed up the Matthew Wright field goal and called for a running play, but Jerome Baker and the Dolphins stacked up James Robinson at the line. No first down.

Miami takes over, still trailing 17-13.

11:53 a.m. | END OF THIRD QUARTER: Jacksonville 17, Miami 13

Is the Jaguars' losing streak about to end? The Jaguars are 15 minutes away from ending the third-longest losing skid in NFL history.

11:51 a.m. |  Interception! Jaguars' Nevin Lawson picks off Tua

That Dolphins "drive" lasted a grand total of one play. Tua Tagovailoa underthrows his target severely, and Nevin Lawson leaps for the Jacksonville pick. The Jaguar DB got his first career interception and returned the football into Miami territory.

11:47 a.m. |  Fumble! Dolphins strip-sack Trevor Lawrence, recover

Could be a game-changer right there. Trevor Lawrence had the Jaguars marching into Miami territory after a pair of passes to Marvin Jones, with a chance to extend the lead to two scores. But Christian Wilkins — Lawrence's former teammate from Clemson days — broke in to strip the Jaguars' quarterback, and Zach Sieler recovered for the Dolphins.

The third quarter is almost over, and Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami offense are ready to go to work.

11:29 a.m. |  Highlight alert: See Trevor Lawrence TD pass

11:28 a.m. |  Touchdown Jaguars: James Robinson powers Jags into the lead

What a drive for the Jaguars, with a couple of controversial moments in between. Trevor Lawrence got the ball moving with a downfield strike to Jamal Agnew to midfield. James Robinson ended it with a 1-yard plunge over the goal line.

In between was a disputed personal foul — Dolphins safety Jevon Holland got flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit on an incomplete pass for Dan Arnold — and a near-fumble, when Robinson dragged defenders 24 yards to the Miami 1 before losing the ball. Officials on that play ruled that Robinson was already tackled.

That means... the Jaguars, 20-game losing streak and all, are leading the Dolphins in London.

Jaguars 17, Dolphins 13, 12:29 3rd.

11:22 a.m. |  Second half kicks off

Back to the action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Dolphins lead 13-10, but the Jaguars will receive the second-half kick.

11:08 a.m. |  HALFTIME: Miami 13, Jacksonville 10

That's halftime. Tua Tagovailoa led a speedy drive to get the Dolphins within field goal range, but a 58-yard attempt from Jason Sanders drifted wide as the clock ran out.

11:02 a.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence caps drive with TD strike to Marvin Jones

That was a Trevor Lawrence drive to watch. The rookie quarterback conducted that one crisply for the Jaguars, including a crucial conversion on fourth down, and then delivered a strike to Marvin Jones in the corner of the end zone with 40 seconds before halftime.

The Dolphins still lead, but this ballgame just got a whole lot closer.

Dolphins 13, Jaguars 10, 0:40 2nd.

10:48 a.m. |  Sloppy drive for Jaguars, rough field position for Dolphins

The Jaguars did a lot of things wrong on that drive. A recap:

 * Offensive facemask on Luke Farrell, to nullify a 25-yard James Robinson rush.

 * Too many men in the huddle, a penalty to back the Jaguars up after a completion over the middle from Trevor Lawrence to Marvin Jones.

 * Third-down drop by Laviska Shenault.

That's why this team is winless. After a Logan Cooke punt, the Dolphins will take over from their own 2.

10:38 a.m. |  Field goal for Jason Sanders as Dolphins extend lead

For Miami, this might feel like another case of points slipping away. The Dolphins again advanced deep into Jaguars territory, including a fourth-down conversion from Tua Tagovailoa to Mack Hollins inside the red zone. But the drive ran out of steam afterward.

No problem for the Dolphins, though: Jason Sanders converted another field goal, from 24 yards this time, to extend the lead to two scores.

Dolphins 13, Jaguars 3, 5:38 2nd.

10:30 a.m. |  Jaguars' offense stalling out

That's two consecutive three-and-outs for the Jaguars. Emmanuel Ogbah batted, and almost picked off, a third-down attempt by Trevor Lawrence. And Logan Cooke's punt from his own end zone proved to be a shank, starting Tua Tagovailoa and Miami with prime field position.

The last two Jaguars drives have included a rare clipping penalty and an ugly multiple false start. This doesn't look like a team about to break a 20-game losing streak at the moment.

10:15 a.m. |  TUA'S BACK: See Tua Tagovailoa's Dolphins return, opening touchdown in London

That's what Miami Dolphins fans have been waiting to see for close to a month now: Tua Tagovailoa back on the field, and back scoring touchdowns. |  Read more --Dan Rorabaugh

10:10 a.m. |  Field goal: Jason Sanders extends Dolphins' lead

Another smooth drive from Tua Tagovailoa, and a possession that easily could have ended in a touchdown. Jacoby Brissett also made an appearance, finding Durham Smythe downfield for a huge gain on third-and-1.

A holding penalty, followed by a drop, derailed the Miami drive inside the Jacksonville 10. But Jason Sanders came on to boot a 33-yard field goal through the uprights, extending the Miami lead. In 15 minutes and 45 seconds of football, the Dolphins already have 161 yards of total offense.

Dolphins 10, Jaguars 3, 14:15 2nd.

10:06 a.m. |  END OF FIRST QUARTER: Miami 7, Jacksonville 3

That's the end of the first quarter. Tua Tagovailoa has shown zero rust so far. The Dolphins' QB is finding gaping holes in that Jaguars secondary, advancing the ball inside the red zone on Miami's second drive.

9:57 a.m. |  Field goal: Matthew Wright puts Jaguars on board

That's a better drive from the Jaguars, and it ends with something Jaguars fans haven't seen this season - a field goal.

Jamal Agnew got the first two touches on offense, and Trevor Lawrence kept the offense moving deep into Miami territory before a bad third-down drop off the fingers of Dan Arnold. The Jaguars didn't end up empty-handed, though: Matthew Wright drilled a field goal, an actual field goal, through the goalposts from 40 yards.

Dolphins 7, Jaguars 3.

9:50 a.m. | Touchdown Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa nearly perfect on opening drive

Tua Tagovailoa showed no signs of rib troubles, or any other problems, on that possession. The second-year Dolphins quarterback from Alabama conducted a smooth opening drive, connecting with Mike Gesicki, Mack Hollins and Jaylen Waddle to advance the football inside the Jacksonville red zone.

From there, a scramble to the Jaguars 6 and a 6-yard quick slant to Waddle finished up the opening drive, carving up that Jacksonville secondary in a drive that consumed half of the first quarter. If the Jaguars are going to keep their 20-game losing streak from stretching to 21, they'll have to do it from behind.

Dolphins 7, Jaguars 0.

9:35 a.m. |  Kickoff time in London; fan on field disrupts start

The Jaguars are set to kick off, with Logan Cooke to boot the ball to the Dolphins... but first, there's the matter of removing an intruder from the field. This fan is in a Jaguars jersey but is most definitely not on the 53-man roster.

Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is the voice that Trevor Lawrence hears in his ears during games. So far, that voice has been reluctant to call Lawrence's number for one of the most routine plays in football: getting a direct snap from behind center for a quarterback sneak near the goal line.
