Rowing Wraps up Head of the Grand Regatta

The First Varsity Eight and First Novice Eight squads both finished second in their respective races

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University rowing squad continued its 2021 fall slate by participating at the Head of the Grand this morning, Oct. 16, in East Lansing, Mich. The races took place on the Grand River and was hosted by Michigan State University. 

Along with Eastern Michigan and Michigan State, there were three other institutions in attendance. Grand Valley State University, Miami University, and Purdue University competed at the regatta. 

How It Happened
- The Eagles' First Varsity Eight team recorded the fastest time of the day, placing second behind MSU at 12:07.7. The Green and White finished 4.5 seconds behind the Spartans' 1V8+ boat. 
- EMU's First Novice Eight posted a second-place finish with a 13:09.4. Michigan State's top novice squad crossed the finish line in 12:54.9.
- Eastern Michigan's Second Varsity Four boat finished fifth with a time of 13:52.7, behind Michigan's State top boat (13:18.2).
- The Second Varsity Eight team finished sixth with a 12:54.4, while the Third Varsity Eight tallied a time of 13:45.3.
- The First Varsity Four squad crossed the finish line in 14:07.7, while the Third Varsity Four posted a 14:47.1 time. 
- Eastern Michigan's Third Novice Eight and Second Novice Eight recorded times of 15:14.7 and 15:34.7, respectively.

- "We had several good second-place finishes today," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. " We are ready to go home and get to business of turning them into firsts." 
- " Today we had some great first race experiences for our novice rowers," Assistant Coach/Head Novice Coach Nicole Marek said. "This was a good starting point for us and I'm looking forward to seeing how we progress throughout the rest of the year."

Up Next 
- Eastern Michigan will compete at the Head of the Charles Saturday, Oct. 23. The regatta will take place on the Charles River in Boston, Mass.
