It took a couple of weeks, but NBC‘s Saturday Night Live this weekend figured out its take on the pop culture hit Squid Game — by viewing the Korean Netflix drama through the lens of a country music video.
Pete Davidson and guest host Rami Malek led the sendup, first appearing as good ol’ boys crooning about rusted out Chevys, lost dogs and hateful exes. What to do when saddled with such a sad lot in life? “Guess I gotta play the Squid Gaaaame,” they sang.
From there, the two were transported from the countryside to the Squid Game barracks, where the lyrics said they “got a number, not a real naaaame,” and where they were watched over by guards whose masks were adorned with the same “symbols as a PlayStation” (as well as a host who looks like “Doctor Doom”).
Also popping up in the music video spoof were versions of the Gangster and wild-eyed Moll characters from Squid Game, as Davidson and Malek’s characters first navigated the super-deadly “Red Light, Green Light” playing field, followed by the “Glass Stepping Stones” round.
At one point, Malek’s character looked to the “piggy bank in the sky” and remarked (as we all did) in song: “Forty-five billion won/that’s a whole lotta moneyyy…. At least I think it is/I’m confused by the currencyyy.”
Capping the spoof was a nice stinger about what the winning player (ill-advisedly) did with his won windfall.
What did you think of SNL‘s awaited take on Squid Game? Was it on par with what TVLine pitched last week, a version where Davidson’s Chad character is unfazed by the bodies dropping around him?

Watched the Squid Game spoof. Sorry, it was a clever idea, but goes on entirely too long and just isn’t that funny.
So, where’s the video?
No video assets were released until the most wee hours of the night — now added! Enjoy. –Mgmt.
That was bad
So many opportunities, such bad writers
I didn’t get Squid game skit but it reminded me why I laugh so hard at cowboy hips in Applebees commercial!! SNL does great spoof videos skits! Although I didn’t watch no talent family on SNL I saw posted club video and when Kim feel asleep I rolled because as a single mom I remember those get myself home to my kids days!! Punkie was the funniest in that club video spoof!
Loved Rami on this the entire show made me laugh 😂 such talent Bowen Yang was hysterical
I bet Daddy Long Legs plus Oompa Loompa will get him another Emmy nomination lol.
Oh and George Takei!
Rami as Pete & Pete as Rami in the quiz show sketch was good too.
It’s always a treat when they can figure out a way to lump a bunch of celeb impersonations together.
This site used to do a best & worst of the night. I’d go for worst as the last one, the singer at the nightclub, everything else was really good.
And oh, my…Chloe Fineman as Jennifer Coolidge, Maria Villasenor as Kristen Wiig and Bowen Yang as GeorgeTakei. Fantastic.
Melissa Villasenor 👍
Yes. Thank you for the correction.
I actually loved the night club singer. I watched with my dad, and we were both laughing our behinds off.
I was expecting them to do something better than that. That was lame.
I fast forwarded through the Squid Game video when I watched the episode because I hadn’t seen the show yet. Just watched it now. Definitely glad I waited to watch it.
