Some sad news to report out of the hockey world. Leo Boivin, a Hockey Hall-of-Famer and a Boston Bruins legend, has passed away at the age of 89. The news was reported by his nephew on Twitter.

Boivin played with five NHL teams throughout his 19 career, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars. However, it was during his 12 seasons as a member of the Bruins where he really made his mark. A blueliner, Boivin was feared throughout the league, and played alongside other Boston defensive stalwarts Allan Stanley, Fern Flaman, Doug Mohns and Bob Armstrong.

"I had been in Boston for a long time and they were struggling," said Boivin after his retirement. "(General Manager) Hap Emms asked me if I would go to Detroit. It was near the (trade) deadline. (Doug) Barkley lost his eye that year and Sid Abel wanted me to go there. I said, 'Sure, I'll go to Detroit.' It was quite a feeling to go in there because they had guys like (Gordie) Howe and (Alex) Delvecchio that I had hit hard through the years. But they welcomed me with open arms. I really enjoyed playing there."

He would help get the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup final that season (1965-66), but they lost to the Montreal Canadiens. That was the closest Boivin would get to having his name etched on the Stanley Cup.

Following his retirement in 1970, Boivin became a scout. He served as interim coach of the St. Louis Blues during the 1975–76 and 1977–78 seasons, and coached the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League for a brief period, tutoring young defenceman Denis Potvin. Boivin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986. Our sincere condolences to Boivin's family, friends and fans.
