Roth Goal Gives Yale 1-0 Win

Shorrock Makes Five Saves for Elis

NEW HAVEN, Conn.Rebeka Róth found the net at 79:11 and Marisa Shorrock earned her first win in the Yale net as the Bulldogs notched their first Ivy League victory of the 2021 season.

Yale's 1-0 win today over Cornell at Reese Stadium was the result of excellent defense and a persistent front line putting shots on the Big Red net. The Elis had 13 attempts and the second-to-last one was the winner.

First-year defender Nana Yang sent a through ball for Roth, who dribbled for 20 feet and went around the sliding goalie before firing a left-footer low inside the right post.

"For Rebeka to get her first career goal is so awesome," said Sarah Martinez, Yale's Loring Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer. "She has worked tirelessly since she set foot on campus, and I am thrilled for her to get rewarded today."

The Bulldog defense made that goal the difference by limiting Cornell chances late in the game as Shorrock finished with five saves, including some athletic stops with close calls.

"Our group has gotten better every single day of this season. It has been a tough go for us to not get results we maybe have deserved but I couldn't be happier for our women to get a well deserved win today. We stayed consistent to our game plan and earned a late goal off some quality soccer," said Martinez.

The Elis are next in action a week from today in Philadelphia against Penn.
