Jim Miller capped off his 38th fight with the UFC by delivering a highlight-reel knockout.
Now standing alone with the most fights in the history of the promotion, Miller blasted Erick Gonzalez with an absolutely brutal left hand at 14 seconds into the second round to earn his first knockout in just over five years at UFC Vegas 40 on Saturday night.
“I feel great,” Miller said post-fight. “He’s a tough dude. Coming in with nothing to lose. Old dog, new tricks, I got a KO.
“I’m here to fight. I just like to fight and then get paid. My early goal was 40 fights in the UFC, we’re two away from that. We’re going to try to get to [UFC] 300.”
To his credit, Gonzalez showed no fear for his first time in the UFC as he landed an early takedown followed by a nasty combination on the feet that had Miller rattled momentarily. The New Jersey native managed to drag Gonzalez down to the ground in order to regain his senses and recover but he couldn’t keep the fight there for very long.
Back on the feet, Gonzalez got a little too confident with his strikes, which left him open to a series of brutal overhand lefts from Miller that had him looking for the finish. With Gonzalez backed against the cage, Miller started to unload with a series of heavy shots but the UFC newcomer managed to weather the storm in order to make it to the second round.
That changed in a hurry after the fight got restarted with Gonzalez stepping forward with his hands down low and Miller making him pay for it with the perfectly timed left-cross that exploded on his chin like a bomb.
Gonzalez crumbled to the canvas as the referee rushed in to stop the contest as Miller celebrated the knockout and his 22nd overall win in the UFC. Miller is now tied with Demian Maia for the second-most wins in UFC history, behind only Donald Cerrone (23).
Miller has been a stalwart of the promotion for exactly 13 years now and it doesn’t appear he’s slowing down any time soon as he seeks to set a few more records before calling it a career.
