A 58-year-old Coventry man faces a charge of driving under the influence after he drove head-on into a police cruiser, injuring a police officer, the police said Friday.

Patrick Sullivan will be arraigned in District Court on Wednesday, according to a news release issued by Coventry police Capt. Matthew Blair.

Coventry firefighters attended to both drivers following the crash near the junction of Main Street and Old Main Street on Oct. 8. An investigation found that Sullivan had crossed the center line and hit the cruiser.

The police officer's injuries were not life-threatening, but he was taken to the hospital for treatment and he is not working, Blair said.

Sullivan refused a Breathalyzer test and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said Blair.

The crash remains under investigation.
