Matt Reeves was Worried Robert Pattinson Wasn't Interested in Batman Role

There is little doubt that we were all shocked when Robert Pattinson was finally cast as Bruce Wayne in The Batman. After all, there were other names being considered for the role in the upcoming DC project. However, director Matt Reeves admitted he was determined to have the former Harry Potter star in the film. In fact, he was actually worried that Pattinson might not be interested in being Battinson before casting.

Reeves was in attendance at The Batman's panel at DC FanDome and the filmmaker opened up about working on the highly anticipated movie. Before Pattinson was cast, Reeves had a clear idea of what he wanted for the Caped Crusader and he wanted the Twilight actor to portray this version of Batman.

"I really did think, Oh my God, this version of this character, this guy who sort of almost like, if you think of Bruce Wayne as like a reckless rock star in a decaying manner, there's this part of me that saw you as that, and I had no idea that you would be interested in playing the role at all," Reeves said to Pattinson during the virtual event.

He then added that he was terrified that the actor wasn't interested in the role. "And I thought, 'What if Rob doesn't want to play Batman? This will be a disaster,'" Reeves said with a laugh. Luckily, the odds were in his favor as Pattinson was absolutely gunning for the part.

"Then it turned out that you completely on your own had a whole path to the same thing, which is that you had been obsessed with Batman for years. And when you found out that we were doing this version, you were very interested," Reeves said. The rest, as he puts it, was "kind of lucky and fated."

We'll have to admit that we had second thoughts about Reeves' idea at first but after seeing the latest trailer for The Batman, we're glad that he pursued this particular plan. Needless to say, we can't wait to see Battinson in action in March.

The Batman will also star Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. The film is scheduled to release exclusively in theaters on March 4, 2022.
